Special Olympics Soccer Teams to Play Tournament at BC Soccer Provincial Championships in 2013

Vancouver, BC: BC Soccer is pleased to announce a tournament featuring soccer teams from Special Olympics BC. Seven top Special Olympics BC soccer teams will play tournaments in conjunction with the 2013 Youth Provincial Championships. Four of them will play in the 2013 Girls Youth Provincial B Cup in North Vancouver, and three of them at the Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial Cup in Prince George.

In July 2013, top youth teams from around the province will gather in North Vancouver and Prince George to compete for the title of Provincial B Cup Champions. Now in a brand new tournament running in conjunction with BC Soccer’s Provincial Championships, you will be able to see some of the top soccer players in the province from Special Olympics BC (SOBC).

BC Soccer and SOBC have created this opportunity for a high quality environment for these talented athletes to showcase their abilities. Shawn Fevens, SOBC Manager, Sport said “The opportunity for Special Olympics BC to be invited to BC Soccer’s  Provincial Cup Championships provides our athletes with a quality competition experience and allows our organization to create much-needed awareness through a very high-profile event.”

Regarding the showcase events, BC Soccer Youth Competitions Chair Don Dancey said, “BC Soccer is very excited to get involved with Special Olympics BC. It is wonderful to see these athletes having a great time as they perform at their highest level. Soccer is a game that can be played by anyone no matter what their capabilities are. We look forward to working with Special Olympics BC and hope these showcase opportunities become an annual event”.

Fevens added, “The mission of Special Olympics BC is to provide individuals with intellectual disabilities opportunities to enrich their lives and celebrate personal achievement through positive sport experiences. SOBC offers 18 sports, and soccer is one of the most popular, played in over 30 participating communities around the province.”

At the Prince George and North Vancouver Provincial Championships in 2013, BC Soccer and Special Olympics BC will present a showcase tournament that will run its round robin on Saturday with the finals to be played on Sunday.

The Les Sinnott Memorial Boys Provincial Cup and Girls Youth Provincial B Cup each feature 48 teams from across BC. For both events there are eight qualifying teams for each age group, U13 to U18. These teams come from the Coast/Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, Thompson Okanagan, Columbia Kootenays, the North Coast, from the North East, and the Host team. The North Vancouver event will take place at Inter-River Park from Thursday July 4th until Sunday July 7th and the Prince George event will be held at the Rotary and Glen Thomson fields. They are 4 day round robins beginning on Thursday morning and with the medal games played on Sunday.
