BC Soccer continues to work behind the scenes to support soccer by formulating Return To Play plans

Posted on May 1st, 2020 by BC Soccer

Sport is a powerful vehicle that supports not only healthy living and activity but also community. We know that soccer will play an important role across BC as we look to the future to support British Columbians.

May 1st, 2020 - Vancouver BC

Normally, May is a month filled with soccer activity including the primary season of play in the Interior, North and Kootenays, Adult Provincial Cup Finals, and playdowns for the many Youth Provincial Cups. (Not to mention all the other spring soccer activity!)  As we all know, “normal” is being redefined under our current health situation.

We are happy to share that behind the scenes, planning has been underway to develop appropriate return to play recommendations and guidelines to support members and clubs.  Our Provincial Health Authorities have stated as recently as April 21st, that being outside and active is beneficial to children and young adults. BC Soccer is pleased to be part of the “Recreational Sports Advisory Group” supporting framework development for recreation while also actively working with ViaSport on an organized sport framework.

Recently, our membership helped provide valuable feedback that will be critical to support planning documentation we’ll be sharing with the BC government through our partners at Via Sport.

On April 15th, we extended the “suspension of play” until May 15th. Under the current daily changing landscape, we are holding off on making further extensions until we have more clarity on the “Return to Play” planning timelines. Thank you all for your patience as we work through these uncertain times, and we are targeting to have more a definitive update in the coming weeks.

If you are interested in reading more detail on “Return to Play” planning, please see our most recent memo we provided to our members and affiliated clubs.
