BC SOCCER AWARDS

BC Soccer is pleased to be the largest provincial sport organization (PSO) in BC and the third largest soccer specific PSO in Canada. We believe in the power of soccer and look to develop our game by emphasizing its benefits of active and healthy living while supporting our member clubs, districts, and leagues to strengthen and unite their local soccer community.

Ultimately our goal is to promote continued and sustainable soccer and community development and overall growth for our game in every region of British Columbia. We would not be able to work towards and achieve this goal without the numerous dedicated volunteers that work within the clubs, districts, and leagues that represent the membership of the association.

On an annual basis the BC Soccer Board of Directors is able to recognize a small few of exceptional volunteers within the membership. These award winners represent the hundreds of volunteers across the province who are the heart of soccer in BC. They are the individuals who administer, coach, officiate, schedule (and everything else in-between) whom without, the players of BC would not be able to participate in our beautiful game.

We are also very pleased to recognize and provide awards for the top youth player and adult player from our membership base.

Selection of the award recipients is based on many factors including the individual’s commitment, community involvement and willingness to give back to the game.

On behalf of the association, I would like to congratulate previous and future award recipients and sincerely thank all the hardworking volunteers across the province who services the game of soccer.

Sincerely,

Jason Elligott

Director of Community Development

About Aubrey Sanford*
Aubrey Sanford’s soccer career as player, manager, and administrator spanned more than five decades. Except for his years as a star goalkeeper for the New Westminster Royals, he did most of his work for the game quietly, behind the scenes, as he “didn’t care much for the limelight…” Aubrey was voted “Canada’s Best Goalkeeper of the Half-Century” in 1951.

  • Began his soccer career in 1922 with the Sapperton Club and played as goalkeeper until 1927. Picked up by the New Westminster Royals (1928-1935) and as their goalkeeper, greatly contributed to three Canadian Championship titles, in 1928, 1930, and 1931
  • When soccer began to reorganize after the war, Sanford was team secretary for the Royals (1948). He took over as Manager from 1951 to 1955, and guided the team to two additional National Championships in 1953 and 1955.
  • Member of the BC Soccer Commission from 1958 to 1965, and Chairman, 1962-1965. Member of the Canadian Soccer Association executive from 1962 to 1972, including terms as Vice-President from 1965 to 1968 and President
